HOW TO DEVELOP PROPER SELF-ESTEEM

In my former post building a proper self-esteem , how to build a proper self-esteem, I wrote that, Personal worth is the most basic need of all humans, and this need has to be met, if your life must count, and positively affect your world. But how to develop proper self-esteem is what I will be writing on in this post. In Psalms 11:3, David said, If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do.?

The foundation of proper self-esteem is Love! Clearly, for your life to be meaningful to others, you must understand that self-love is what will motivate you to love others. Also, you cannot know what it means to love yourself, if you do not love God. Jesus said, …Thou shalt love thy Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Matthew 22:37-39

In order to develop a proper sense of self-worth from your creator, you must persuade yourself that God is the only one who knows and loves you totally. One important thing you must understand about God’s love is that it is unconditional. God will not reject you, if you fail at an assignment or in anything for that matter. So, in your relationship with Him, you are not under the kind of pressure you would be in a human relationship.

YOU ARE CREATED IN HIS IMAGE

Your existence is a product of the thought and the hand work of the Almighty God, who made man in His very own image. The psalmist said, also Read define your life first

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!    Psalm 8:4

This, of course, should give you a sense of great value than the views of any other human being. Ron Sider wrote in his in Christianity Today that: Every part of God’s creation is very good and very special because it results from the loving design of Almighty God… As persons created in the divine image we are very special. The dignity and worth of every human being flows from the divine decree, not human decision. Our essential dignity does not come from government fiat, social usefulness, or self-actualisation. It comes from the creator of the galaxies, who selected human beings alone out of the almost infinite multitudes of created order to bear the divine image. Human beings enjoy a God-given worth and dignity that sets them apart from the rest of creation.”

If you allow the truth to keep rolling in your mind day and night, it will not only help you as an individual, it will also help you to strengthen others who might have lost the sense of their worth in life.

how to build a proper self-esteem

The journey to a proper self-esteem begins with having a sense of security in God’s love, but it doesn’t end there. It continues with thinking right. The way you think will determine the way you behave. If you want to influence your behavior, then you have to first change your thinking! How do you see yourself? You need to retrain yourself to think only what is true about you. Knowing who you are in Christ will go a long way in helping you develop a proper self-esteem. Below are some of the thoughts you should preoccupy your mind with:

  • I am created in the image and likeness of God, I am the exact replica of God, so why do I struggle to be like men? Genesis 1:26-27
  • That I am a marvelous work of God’s hands. You need to come to the point of knowledge of how marvelously God has made you; so men’s opinion won’t move you anymore. Psalm 139:14
  • I am peculiar and very unique. God’s word said it in 1 Peter 2:9

You are specifically designed as peculiar and unique and as an instrument to show forth God’s praise. That means, men are supposed to see your uniqueness, and consequently give praise to God for His marvelous works. Why then, do you cramp yourself in obscurity, thinking lowly of yourself? You are too much to be cowered!
